iPhone Killer? LG Secret Cell Phone

LG launched the third LG Black Label Series (following the LG Chocolate and LG Shine) handset - the LG Secret (LG-KF750). The LG Secret is equipped with an advanced 5.0 megapixel camera built into the slimmest profile of any camera handset on the market (at 0.46 inches). The LG Secret boasts 120 fps video and DivX certified playback. Images can be edited with powerful photo and video editing features including Morphing (facial editing) and SmartLight, that automatically adjusts the picture’s light settings. Movie Maker software in the handset can be used to create user music videos.

The LG Secret features music, photos, games, documents, FM radio, and Bluetooth. Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are easy to open and the handset is loaded with a Google Package that enables the user to surf the Internet, log into Gmail, use Google Maps and watch YouTube videos. Motion games are included that use a gyroscope-like effect enabled by the accelerometer sensor. With a tilt or rotation of the handset, the user can throw a dart, hook a fish, or navigate a maze.

Inspired by F1: F1/Carbon GMT Concept Watch

The concept F1/Carbon GMT watch was inspired by the world of F1. Designer John Pszeniczny threw in a carbon fiber body, Swarovski crystals, rubber and metal into this timepiece that features 18 identical rubies while telling the time in all 18 cities on the 2008 F1 circuit. Other features include a built-in lap timer function and a stopwatch. I hope to see this concept go into production. Nice!

The Cassette MP3 player looks like a normal cassette tape, but it actually holds an SD card full of MP3 media. It can be used as a portable audio player by plugging in headphones, but what's really neat is it can be popped into any tape player and play music like any other cassette. Pretty cool!

Tom Tom Killer? Archos 605 Wi-Fi PMP and GPS

Archos announced a new module for the 605 Wi-Fi pmp - a GPS module. The GPS module is meant to be used in a car as it consists of a suction cup dock integrated with a SiRF Star III chip, a speaker, and a headphone jack. The "dock" is powered via the cigarette lighter and can be used to charge the device. The GPS module features on-screen guidance, Points of Interest, favorites, advanced signpost warning and lane assistance option, simulated direction in tunnels, speed limits display with advanced warnings and sound indicators. TeleAtlas maps include 22 countries in Europe, or USA and Canada for North America.

All In One Phone: Elektrobit Satellite PDA Phone Concept

The Elektrobit Satellite/Terrestrial Reference PDA Phone features a QWERTY-keyboard PDA look that's just a touch thicker than a Blackberry 8800. The concept product runs Windows Mobile 6.1 professional and contains a packed feature set—including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, VoIP, a touchscreen, and a 3 megapixel camera.

The phone will run on HSDPA, quad-band GSM/EGPRS and satellite networks. Talk time is 1.3 hours on satellite, 3 hours on WCDMA and between 3.5 to 5 hours on GSM. The entire package is expected to be cost competitive with regular cell phones, Elektrobit promised.

The phone is designed to be compatible with the Terrestar satellite network, which hasn't launched yet. If everything goes as planned the phone could be available in 2009.

Video Projector PMP: Sunlink Projector PMP

Sunlink in Hong Kong announced the first pmp equipped with a video projector. The device looks like a pmp with a 3.5-inch LCD, SD card slot, speaker, remote control, and supports audio, video, and images. The projector lens (iView IPL630 LCOS) is able to project a 53-inch 640 x 480 pixel image. The device runs Windows CE 5.0 core and measures 5.24 x 3.11 x 1.38 inches.

Gothic Pirate Spaceship Watch: DeWitt Concept No. 1

The DeWitt Concept No. 1 is a one-of-a-kind timepiece developed with French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. According to the creators the "gothic pirate spaceship of a watch is taking the steampunk oeuvre to new heights with its expanding riveted case, flying tourbillon, five barrels and a 21 day power reserve." Made in Japan: Clarion DrivTrax Personal Navigation Devices

Clarion introduced two new portable navigation devices - the DrivTrax DTRP7DT and the DrivTrax DTRP50. The DrivTrax DTRP7DT features a 4.3-inch screen, a 1Seg tuner, GPS, 2GB of memory, and a SDHC card slot. It supports MP3, and WMA audio; WMV, MPEG4 video; and JPEG, BMP images. It runs Window CE 5.0 on a Samsung 400MHz processor. It measures 3.27 x 5.16 x 0.866 inches.

The DrivTrax DTRP50 has the same features but includes Bluetooth. It measures 3.56 x 5.17 x 0.866 inches.

Impressive and Not? Sharp Willcom D4 WSO16SH UMPC

Akihabara had a chance to check out Sharp's Willcom D4 WSO16SH umpc. The Willcom D4 features a 5-inch 1024 x 600 pixel touchscreen with LED backlight, 1.33GHz Atom Z520 processor, 1 GB RAM, sliding QWERTY keyboard, 40GB disk, 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, microSD slot, HD audio codec with mono-speaker, and Opera browser riding atop Japanese PHS (W-SIM) or 802.11b/g WiFi. It measures 3.31 x 7.4 x 1.02 inches and runs Windows Vista.

According the Akihabra the device is impressive (and really it's a great looking device with impressive specs) but has only average performance because it's running Windows Vista.

Groundbreaking Design: De Grisogono The Meccanico dG

With its 651 components, the Meccanico dG's mechanical movement is one of the most intricate made today. The Meccanico dG timepiece has two distinct timezones. It is the first to display both analogue and digital time by mechanical means. The time information is displayed by an array of 23 horizontally and vertically positioned microsegments. The segments have four faces: two opposing visible faces fitted with colored strips and two opposing unmarked faces. Time changes are effected by 90° rotations of the required segment or segments. Involving one to twelve segments, time changes are lightning fast. The Meccanico dG comes in a limited edition of 177 watches in titanium and 177 in white gold. Wow.

Here are three very cute alternatives to the iPod shuffle.

Haier unveiled its ibiza Rhapsody H1B008 during CTIA Wireless 2008. The ibiza Rhapsody is a wireless pmp that features a 2.5-inch 320 x 240 pixel LCD, 8GB flash memory, FM radio, Internet Browser, and b/g Wi-Fi. It supports WMA, AAC, MP3, and WAV audio; MPEG4, WMV, M4V, AVI, H.264, and MPG video; and unspecified image formats.

Two Gorillas: Sanyo Gorilla Portable Navigation Systems

The Sanyo Gorilla Portable Navigation Systems feature 4.5-inch (NV-SB360DT) or a 7-inch (NV-SD700DT) touchscreen, a 1Seg TV tuner, a faster CPU (400MHz, and 2DG chipset), 4GB of SSD, SD card reader, and can play MP3 and view JPEG. Like previous Gorillas, they will provide alerts when you're not conforming to road regulations, and when you're polluting the environment (fast acceleration, speeding…).

Apart from screen size, the 7-inch has a non-removable internal battery and the 4.5-inch has swappable batteries.

The K40 supports folder browsing and can be used as a portable hard disk when connected to a PC via USB.

Battery life is estimated at 9 hours for audio and 4 hours for video. The device measures 4.21 x 2.75 x 0.70 inches.

The Future of MIDs: Lenovo IdeaPad U8

Lenovo confirmed that it is one of the first companies to produce a Mobile Internet Device (MID) based on Intel's Atom processor with the introduction of a new all-in-one-device - the Lenovo IdeaPad U8. The IdeaPad features a 5-inch touchscreen, Firefox browser, multimedia functions, and can serve as a hybrid communicator. The IdeaPad U8 uses a unique optical joystick that lets a user interact with the device with one hand.

A number pad on the device reveals its role as a cellular device. The IdeaPad U8 will include support for 2G (EDGE) and 3G mobile data as well as calling. A front camera is also built-in for video chat that will likely be supported through Yahoo Messenger in addition to a back camera for capturing photos and movies. The handheld will also support GPS navigation. I'd really like to get my hands on one of those.

Another Meizu Clone: DEC I50






The DEC I50 (left) has a design that similar to the Meizu M3 (below). DEC isn't the first company to copy Meizu. The Newman Momo X5 is similar to the Meizu M6.






The I50 features a a 1.46-inch TFT LCD screen and uses a tactile strip for navigation. It supports WMA, APE, FLAC and AVI formats.

Wireless Broadband Next Generation: Nokia N810 WiMax Edition

Nokia officially announced the newest Nseries device, the Nokia N810 WiMax Edition at CTIA Wireless 2008. This device's specs are similar to the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet but takes advantage of the new wide-area high-speed mobile WiMAX networks. WiMAX networks keep the connection going when Wi-Fi hotspots are out of reach and tethering to a 3G phone via Bluetooth is too much of a hassle.

The AT-131 mp4 player looks a little like an iPod 3G clone.
