For the Stylish Fitness Conscious: Garmin Forerunner 405

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Garmin Forerunner 205 and 305. Well, the newest GPS-enabled fitness device from Garmin was introduced at CES 2008.

The Forerunner 405 has something for everyone. It can track a runner's speed, distance, heart rate and location accurately and effortlessly, while the revolutionary patent-pending touch bezel on the face of the watch makes navigation a snap. Tap, hold or run a finger along the bezel to begin a new workout, access the training history or challenge a Virtual Partner. The Virtual Partner’s pace can be adjusted without having to interrupt your workout by stopping. The Forerunner 405 is water-resistant and can be used outdoors or indoors (with an optional foot pod).

Using ANT+Sport technology, the Forerunner 405 sends workout data to the user's computer via automatic wireless data transfer. There's no need to take off the watch or bother with cables as the computer automatically syncs with the Forerunner 405 as soon as the user enters the room. And the data transfer is two-way. Runners, joggers, cyclists and hikers can send courses, goals and workouts to their Forerunner 405 before they begin, and then the data gets sent back to the user's computer when the workout is over.

The Forerunner 405 does all that and it's a stylish watch. Nice.

Sports Watches with Heart Rate Monitors 2

Here is one more watch that incorporates a heart rate monitor and it's designed for both men and women. The Polar F6 Heart Rate Monitor is great for exercising in large groups where other wireless devices can interfere with the watch’s signal. The F6’s coded signal prevents crosstalk with other monitoring devices. It comes in green, black diamond, pink coral, sand pearl, black coal, and denim stone (colors are selectable from the above link).

The F6 features the functions required to train in “zones”. Those features include: OwnZone for providing automatic calculation of training zone with visible/audible alarm; OwnCal for tracking calorie expenditure with percent fat burn; Exercise Diary; SonicLink for transfer of data to web service; Zone Pointer for visual guidance to target zone; and Fitness Points (every 10 min. in target zone).

The Polar F6 displays current heart rate, percentage of maximum heart rate and training time. Storage of previous workout, including date, average and maximum heart rate, time spent in target zone, training time and calories burned. Storage of cumulative training time and calories burned, as well as total number of workouts and average workout frequency. It is water resistant to 30 meters.

Sports Watches with Heart Rate Monitors

Here are more examples of the blurring of the line between electronic device capabilities. These sports watches come with a heart rate monitor.

The Garmin Forerunner 50 with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT Stick sports watch has a nice classic look. It’s waterproof to 30 meters.

The watch is perfect for monitoring workouts whether you run or cycle (when paired with optional speed/cadence sensor). It keeps track of training data including training time, pace, distance, lap pace, lap time, lap distance, average and best pace, calories burned, maximum and average heart rate. The Forerunner 50 comes bundled with a wireless heart rate monitor which continuously tracks heart beats per minute and wirelessly transmits them back to the watch.

Once training is done, the Forerunner 50 wirelessly transmits the training data to a PC when it’s within range. The data can be analyzed and shared through the Garmin Connect online community.

The Timex Ironman Triathlon heart rate monitor sports watch can be worn by both men and women. It features a chest strap heart rate monitor, large 3-line display for easy viewing of workout data, and a full range of sport timing features. It is water resistant to 50 meters.

The watch tracks average heart rate and pre-set target heart rate zones with data for time spent within that zone and alarms. It also offers up to four linked interval timers, each with its own target zone, and a recovery timer that measures your heart rate after a timed recovery during or after your workout. Other features include:
• 5 interval timer workouts with warm-up and cool-down
• 100-hour chronograph with lap and split, either in large digits
• 100-lap memory with average heart rate per laps
• 100-hour, 3-mode countdown timer
• 5 alarms with daily/weekday/weekend options

The Suunto X6HR Heart Rate Wrist-Top Computer Watch is a combination altimeter, barometer, clinometer, compass, watch and heart rate monitor. It’s water resistant to 100 meters.

The heart rate monitor displays heart rate limits, interval reminder, average-highest-lowest rate, and memory capacity for different recording intervals 4h 20m-2s, 22h-10s, 133h-60s. The built-in compass includes bearing, graphic compass rose and bearing tracking. The barometer provides sea level pressure, absolute pressure, weather trend graph, temperature, 48-hour memory and weather alarm. The time features (it is a watch after all) include calendar, 3 alarms with date option, and dual time capability for traveling in different time zones.

With access to Suuntosports.com, users can meet other sport enthusiasts and find and share information and tips for their activities. PC interface software and cable included.
